The Dowry That Stayed
Haouz Plains, Morocco
She wove it for a marriage that never happened. Years later, she unrolled it for her own daughter. The colors had not faded. Neither had the hope.
In the plains near Boujad, a rug woven for a dowry carries specific intentions — symbols for fertility, for protection, for a household that prospers. This one was made for a wedding that was called off three days before the ceremony. The girl kept the rug. She did not marry for another twelve years, and when she did, she brought this with her — not as dowry, but as proof that she had waited on her own terms. Her daughter inherited it. Her granddaughter sold it, decades later, to a dealer who did not know the story. The symbols still hold. The intentions still hover in the wool, patient as they have always been.
