Autumn Held in Wool
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The leaves turned early that year. She wove quickly, before the color left the hills. What she caught still burns.
There is a week in October when the Atlas foothills turn the color of fire. The locals call it the 'breathing of the mountain' — a brief exhale of warmth before winter closes in. This rug was woven during one of those weeks, by a woman who worked without stopping, as if she knew the color would not last. She used every scrap of orange wool she had, supplemented with dyes she made from pomegranate rind and the bark of certain trees. The result is a rug that seems to hold late afternoon light, even in a dark room. She made three rugs that October. This is the only one that survived intact. The others were worn through with love and use. This one was saved, as if its owners knew it was too beautiful for daily life.
