A piece woven by hand · A memory carried across time
The Forge-Keeper's Wife
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
Her husband shaped iron all day. She shaped color all night. Between them, they made everything the village needed.
The orange in this rug has an unusual depth — it seems to glow from within, as if lit by its own fire. Local legend says the weaver was married to the village blacksmith, and she learned to see color the way he saw metal: as something alive, something that responded to heat and time and pressure. She would watch the forge for hours, studying how iron moved from black to red to orange to white. Then she would return to her loom and try to capture that progression in wool. This rug is one of her later works, made when her eyes were failing but her hands still knew exactly what they were doing. The pattern is imperfect. The color is not.
