A piece woven by hand · A memory carried across time
Ember and Aftermath
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The fire took the storehouse. But the saffron survived in the cellar, and she wove its color into proof of what remained.
Orange is not a simple color to make. It requires precision — too much mordant and it dulls to rust; too little and it fades within a year. The woman who wove this rug was known for her oranges. She had learned the technique from her mother, who learned it from hers, a chain of knowledge reaching back before anyone kept records. When she died, her daughter tried to replicate the color and failed. The recipe, it turned out, had never been written. It lived only in her hands. This rug is one of the last true oranges from that line.
