A piece woven by hand · A memory carried across time
The Year of the Painted Door
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
Someone had painted the door blue that spring. By winter, the color had entered the wool. No one questioned how.
There are years that mark themselves in the weaving. 1967. The year a trader from Fez passed through with pigments no one had seen — a blue that seemed to float above the surface, an orange that glowed like embers at twilight. The women traded grain for small packets of color, and that summer the looms of the village produced rugs that broke every pattern they knew. This is one of them. The elders disapproved. The rugs sold for twice the usual price. The trader never returned, and no one learned where the colors came from.
