What the Shepherd's Wife Knew
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The flock returned each autumn thinner. But the wool — the wool remembered summer. She wove it before the memory faded.
In the high pastures above Azrou, the sheep grow wool that holds light differently than lowland flocks. Something in the grasses, perhaps, or the altitude itself. This rug was made from a single season's shearing — a year when the rains came late and the sheep wandered higher than usual, into meadows that bloomed with flowers no one had names for. The colors are not dyed. They are grown. The woman who wove this had buried three children and raised five. She did not speak of grief. She wove it, and moved on.
