Two Sisters, One Loom
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
They argued over everything except the pattern. The warp was their mother's. The weft, their own. In the end, neither could say who made what.
The story goes that two sisters inherited a single loom and refused to divide it. They wove in shifts — one by morning light, one by oil lamp — each adding to what the other had begun. The orange was the elder sister's signature: bold, insistent, taking up space. The pink was the younger's: softer, appearing where you didn't expect it, holding the composition together without demanding attention. They fought constantly. They never lived apart. This rug was finished the year the younger sister married, and she took nothing from the house except her share of the bride price. The elder sister wove alone after that. Her rugs were never quite as balanced.
