A piece woven by hand · A memory carried across time
Market Day, After the Rain
Middle Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The dyes ran in the storm. She wrung out the wool and kept weaving. The accident became the pattern.
Not every masterpiece is intentional. This rug began as something else — a commission, perhaps, or a dowry piece with a prescribed design. But the rains came early that year, and the wool she had hung to dry absorbed moisture that shifted the mordants. Colors bled into each other. Boundaries dissolved. Rather than start over, she wove what the rain had given her. The orange streaks into ochre. The purple bleeds into brown. It should look like a mistake. Instead, it looks like weather — like the way clouds break over the mountains, never quite the same twice. The woman who made this was practical. She sold it as she sold all her work. She did not know she had made something unrepeatable.
